Comc book films – the latest ‘thing’ in Hollywood?

It seems graphic novels are now the latest source material for movies in Hollywood. Script writers are buying the rights to films featuring your favourite characters.

Director Len Wiseman (Die Hard, Underworld) after visiting and buying  Radical’s ‘Shrapnel’, obtained the film rights straight away.

Director Matthew Vaughn  (Layer Cake) after showing clips from film with a crime fighting teenager Fanboy, multiple studios considered distribution. Lionsgate optained the right for a 2010 release.

Is this another ‘fad’ craze or the continuation of Hollywood recognising the huge back catalogue of material in the comic domain?
The current boom can be traced back to 2000 — X-Men grossed $150 million. followed by X-2:X-Men United in 2003,which earned $215 million. Spider-Man grossed more than $400 million. And the Batman sequel The Dark Knight with $1 billion becoming the second highest grossing movie in history after Titanic. From these figures, the comic genre is hard to ignore.

DC Comics owned by Warner Bros., is now adding more features to its list, catching up with Marvel.
Future films – Ryan Reynolds will star in the science-fiction The Green Lantern from the director Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) in 2011. A third Batman film from director Christopher Nolan starring Christian Bale will be out no later than 2012. Look out for lesser-known characters from Green Arrow to Wonder Woman to The Flash in the future.
