The Disney deal – the pros and cons.

The Disney deal – the pros and cons.

After the aquisition of Marvel by Disney for $4 billion, including Marvel Comics, over 5,000 characters, and Marvel Studios, along with successful franchises like the Hulk. Disney also get a boys end of the market, Marvel get a global corp. media company to work with. But is this generally good or bad in the long run for Marvel fans and the Marvel characters? Below are some of the pros and cons i think from a fan’s point of view.

Pro – Disney the best media company out there?
Dc comics are owned by Time Warner and even so, Marvel having been doing great with their own offerings. With Disney now behind them, more resources will be at Marvel’s disposal, so better quality SHOULD be forth coming.  Also, Disney wants to bring the characters licensed to Fox (X-Men, Fantastic Four) and Sony (Spider-Man) back on-board and take over from Paramount as distributor of Marvel Studios’ films. “It clearly would be in our best interest if we ended up as the sole distributor,” said Disney Chief Executive Robert  A. Iger in a recent press conference.

Pro: Marvel at Disneyworld!
In the future, you will be cuddled by Pluto, sang to by Cinderella and jumped on by the Beast, as there is no reason why Disney can’t have the X-men or other Marvel characters featured at Disney world. This also means, every Disney shop in the world will now carry Marvel merchandise.

Pro: Pixar!!!
The Incredibles is probably the most Marvel like, with comparisons to the Fantastic Four, but with the help of Pixar on Marvel related films, i personally can’t wait for the results. Pixar’s rep. has come from not only great animation, but great story telling. I think this can only be an advantage for Marvel.

Pro: Disney will boost the X-men films and spin offs.
First two X-men films – very good, The Last stand – needed Bryan Singer, etc., etc., Wolverine: Origins – took a few watches to enjoy and not be nerdish about Deadpool and other character differences, but that aside, Disney, i think can help massively with what works as a comic screen epic, which is basically what i’d like to see for the next X-men film. Big inter-galactic battle through different time lines and Sentinels and and and………….! There is a wealth of back stories and ideas – Pixar!

Con: The pairing will not go down well, at any time, with some.
Spider-Mickey, Cyclops in Fantasia re-make, not likely, but i think some won’t see past this and go read something else……..shame.

Con: No more cross-over characters.
In the past, characters from the DC and Marvel worlds met. Now with Warner owning DC and Disney owning Marvel, a link up again seems slim, but fingers crossed, not out of the question.

Con: Disney the corporate body.
Will the characters take on a more Disney flavour? Iger indicated that they don’t want to mess with Marvel’s successful movie formula, saying “the bottom line is, we like what they’ve been doing so far,” but it still gives one pause to see Marvel’s occasionally dark and gritty universe stamped with a pair of mouse ears. Of course, if it means that we’ll actually get some halfway decent Marvel cartoons out of the deal, thanks to the Disney Channel, then this might turn out to be a boon, but the live-action aspect is what worries us. Can you imagine an Xavier’s School Musical with an all-mutant cast, or a Hannah Montana/Dazzler secret-identity comedy?

Con: a change anyway.
The simple fact of when one business aquires another business, things change. They maybe internal changes, with the new companies’ products staying the same. Sometimes a complete re-think is done on how the new company will operate and present itself. Will this happen with Marvel or will Disney see the integrity of the Marvel products and leave the Marvel boys to do what they do best….hmmmm…..

All is speculation at this point, but it does make good discussion!
