X men recommended reading.

The X men series has had its ups and downs over the years.
From 1963 to the mid 70′s with the X men multinational team to the opening of the door for comic movies in Hollywood on the plus side, while the 90′s saw readership drop mainly due to confusing time travel stories, but also most comics suffered in this era.

Over the noughties great storyline have been produced, mostly in the last few years.
The list is in no particular order, but if after reading, please dig into the back catalogue of the X-men.

Astonishing X-Men Volume 1: Gifted TPB
Wrote by Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire) . John Cassiday (artwork).
A good way to catchup on the X-men and the aspects that have made the series great.

X-Men: Second Coming
A great story. Xmen die , Xmen leave the outfit. Basically, a great conclusion story and massive battle. If you buy just one, buy this one.

X-Men: Deadly Genesis TPB: 1 (X-Men (Marvel Paperback))
Professor X has a secret, a dark secret which comes back to haunt him and his student. Characters die, new characters are brought in and new villains rise, one shapes up to be one of the baddest in X-Men history.

House Of M TPB
The Avengers and the X-Men are faced with a common foe that becomes their greatest threat: Wanda Maximoff! The Scarlet Witch is out of control, and the fate of the entire world is in her hands. A great read.

X-Men: Messiah Complex TPB
The 1st part of one of the greatest X men tales.
‘Easily the best X-Men crossover in over a decade.’ – IGN.com In the aftermath of HOUSE OF M, DECIMATION and ENDANGERED SPECIES, the future of mutants has never been bleaker.

X-Force/Cable: Messiah War TPB
The sequel to 2007′s Messiah CompleX Cyclops has complete faith that his son, Cable, who will do everything he can to protect the mutant messiah  who he believes will save mutantkind. But he also knows what havoc former X-Man Lucas Bishop has wreaked in the nightmarish future. Another bit of time travel, but this time the story can be followed!
A great read.

X-Men: Nation X HC (Uncanny X-Men: Nation X)
The X-men trying to build a home for themselves, Magneto returns, but is he friend or foe?
