The prequel video game for Wolverine orgins is out, so what to expect.
Wolverine would have to be the first game ever played that was actually BETTER than the movie. The movie was ok, but not up to the hype that surrounded it or to the level of storyline expected from X-men fans.
However, back to the game.
The game builds everything apart from a few scenes from the film, from the comic book universe, creating a better story, and allowing for some truly great fights that would have been far too expensive to recreate on the big screen. While it skims over a few key scenes from the film (Logan’s childhood and the death of his wife)the game fills in the gaps with some more important details (the discovery of mutant hunting robots and experiments on mutants). The rest – Logan wants revenge after his brother Sabretooth kills his wife, and submits himself to a the x-weapon program…you know the rest.
The game is pure action from start to finish with enough fights to break up the repetitive nature of some of the levels. There are various locations ranging from dense jungles and temples to futuristic laboratories, and building as you go. Over time you will gain new abilities allowing you to play through earlier levels with everything unlocked.
Graphics and sound are good but nothing like the best shoot ‘em ups coming out. However, the sheer scale of some fights are amazing and seeing Wolverine’s visible damage adds to the game play. aGore fans of bloody shot ‘em ups will like the gore level. Apart from one censored moment, there is plenty of splatter moments showing the real intensity of Wolverine’s character.Nice!
Verdict – pure addrenalin. There’s a heap of moves to use and a ton of enemies to slice your way through. Complaints would be the limited level design, and repetitive nature of the fights. Over time you will grow tired of seeing the same mini-bosses pop up, and the same hoards of enemies charging at you, but they do switch up often enough. In conclusion, a great way to vent out your frustrations in the day in a controlled environment, but not enough depth for mega lengthy game play.
