Simon Kinberg, states in an interview with 30ninjas that the reason for killing off Cyclops was because the story was about the transformation of Jean Grey to the Dark Phoenix – good turning to evil. In the comics, she displays this by destroying things like planets. The next best to show her evil, was to kill her nearest and dearest, Cyclops.
So, the opinions were, show The Dark Phoenix blowing up earth or most of it or kill a main character?
If i remember correctly from the last stand, The Dark Phoenix nearly wipes out the prison island at the end of the film. By then, you have almost forgot about Cyclops.
Her just going ‘off the boil’ or showing more of a rampage would have still got the point across, with an extra character, Cyclops on the X-men side.
I think other internal reasons were more of a decision on killing off Cyclops, especially with his exit so early in the film.
